A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe,

a part limited in time and space.

He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling

as something separated from the rest,

a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us,

restricting us to our personal desires

and to affection for a few persons nearest to us.

Our task must be to free ourselves

from this prison

by widening our circle of compassion

to embrace all living creatures

and the whole of nature in its beauty.

Lord, thou knowest better than myself

that I am growing older and will soon be old.

Keep me from becoming too talkative,

and especially from the unfortunate habit

of thinking that I must say something

on every subject and at every opportunity.

Release me from the idea

that I must straighten out other peoples’ affairs.

With my immense treasure of experience and wisdom,

it seems a pity not to let everybody partake of it.

But thou knowest, Lord,

that in the end I will need a few friends.

Keep me from the recital of endless details;

give me wings to get to the point.

Grant me the patience

to listen to the complaints of others;

help me to endure them with charity.

But seal my lips on my own aches and pains —

they increase with the increasing years

and my inclination to recount them is also increasing.

I will not ask thee for improved memory,

only for a little more humility

and less self-assurance

when my own memory doesn’t agree with that of others.

Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be wrong.

Keep me reasonably gentle.

I do not have the ambition to become a saint –

– it is so hard to live with some of them –

– but a harsh old person is one of the devil’s masterpieces.

Make me sympathetic without being sentimental,

helpful but not bossy.

Let me discover merits where I had not expected them,

and talents in people whom I had not thought to possess any.

And, Lord, give me the grace to tell them so.

Amen

Those who make compassion

an essential part of their lives

find the joy of life.

Kindness deepens the spirit

and produces rewards

that cannot be completely explained in words.

It is an experience more powerful than words.

To become acquainted with kindness

one must be prepared to learn new things

and feel new feelings.

Kindness is more

than a philosophy of the mind.

It is a philosophy of the spirit.

“People usually consider walking on water

or in thin air a miracle.

But I think the real miracle

is not to walk either on water or in thin air,

but to walk on earth.

Every day we are engaged in a miracle

which we don’t even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds,

green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child –

– our own two eyes.

All is a miracle.”

“The source of love is deep in us

and we can help others realize a lot of happiness.

One word, one action,

one thought

can reduce another person’s suffering

and bring that person joy.”

It is possible to live twenty-four hours a day

in a state of love.

Every movement, every glance,

every thought, and every word

can be infused with love.

I am inviting you to go deeper,

to learn and to practice

so that you become someone

who has a great capacity

for being solid, calm, and without fear,

because our society needs people like you

who have these qualities,

and your children, our children,

need people like you,

in order to go on,

in order to become solid,

and calm, and without fear.

Overcome your uncertainties

and free yourself from dwelling on sorrow.

When you delight in existence,

you will awaken,

and become a guide to those in need,

revealing the path to many.

NEVER GIVE UP
No matter what is going on

Never give up
Develop the heart

Too much energy in your country
Is spent developing the mind
Instead of the heart

Be compassionate
Not just to your friends
But to everyone
Be compassionate

Work for peace
In your heart and in the world
Work for  peace

And I say again
Never give up

No matter what is going on around you
Never give up

Treasure silence when you find it,

and while being mindful of your duties,

set time aside,

to be alone with yourself.
Cast off pretense and self-deception

and see yourself as you really are.

Take small account of might,

wealth and fame,

for they soon pass and are forgotten.

Instead, nurture love within you

and strive to be a friend to all.

Truly, compassion is a balm for many wounds.
