Lord, thou knowest better than myself

that I am growing older and will soon be old.

Keep me from becoming too talkative,

and especially from the unfortunate habit

of thinking that I must say something

on every subject and at every opportunity.

Release me from the idea

that I must straighten out other peoples’ affairs.

With my immense treasure of experience and wisdom,

it seems a pity not to let everybody partake of it.

But thou knowest, Lord,

that in the end I will need a few friends.

Keep me from the recital of endless details;

give me wings to get to the point.

Grant me the patience

to listen to the complaints of others;

help me to endure them with charity.

But seal my lips on my own aches and pains —

they increase with the increasing years

and my inclination to recount them is also increasing.

I will not ask thee for improved memory,

only for a little more humility

and less self-assurance

when my own memory doesn’t agree with that of others.

Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be wrong.

Keep me reasonably gentle.

I do not have the ambition to become a saint –

– it is so hard to live with some of them –

– but a harsh old person is one of the devil’s masterpieces.

Make me sympathetic without being sentimental,

helpful but not bossy.

Let me discover merits where I had not expected them,

and talents in people whom I had not thought to possess any.

And, Lord, give me the grace to tell them so.

The wave does not need to die to become water.

She is already water.

That is where my dearest

and brightest dreams have ranged —

to hear for the duration of a heartbeat

the universe

and the totality of life

in its mysterious, innate harmony.

A man is not called wise

because he talks and talks again;

but if he is peaceful,

loving and fearless

then he is in truth called wise.

Before anything else

the One must exist eternally;

from his power derives everything

that always is or will ever be.

He is the Eternal and embraces all times.

He knows profoundly all events

and He himself is everything.

He creates everything

beyond any beginning of time

and beyond any limit of place and space.

He is not subject to any numerical law,

or to any law of measure or order.

He himself is law, number, measure,

limit without limit,

end without end,

act without form.

It takes a certain ingenuous faith

– but I have it –

to believe that people who read and reflect

more likely than not

come to judge things

with liberality and truth.

January 9 2014 ice on Parkway 088To accept some idea of truth

without experiencing it

is like a painting of a cake

on paper which you cannot eat.

There is no taste,

and you will give up,

because it doesn’t mean anything,

even though you sit seven days.

But our true zazen cannot be like that.

If Zen was like that,

it would have vanished from this world

a long time ago.

Zen is still alive

because of the other side of the truth.

Only when each one of us feels the truth,

appreciates the truth,

accepts the truth,

and is ready to follow the truth,

will it work.

When someone puts himself

outside of the truth

in order to study the truth,

he won’t know what to do

when something happens to him.
