Allow the heart to empty itself of all turmoil!

Retrieve the utter tranquility of the mind

from which you issued.

Although all forms are dynamic,

and we all grow and transform,

each of us is compelled

to return to our root.

Our root is quietude.

Whatever words we utter
should be chosen with care
for people will hear them
and be influenced by them
for good or ill.

The wise ones
fashioned speech with their thought,
sifting it as grain is sifted
through a sieve.

A man is not called wise

because he talks and talks again;

but if he is peaceful,

loving and fearless

then he is in truth called wise.

The hush comes

with the deepening of Autumn;

but it comes gradually.

Our ears are attuned to it,

day by quieter day.

But even now,

if one awakens

in the deep darkness of the small hours,

one can hear it,

a foretaste of Winter silence.

It’s a little painful now,

and a little lonely

because it is so strange.

The Formless Way
We look at it, and do not see it; it is invisible.
We listen to it, and do not hear it; it is inaudible.
We touch it, and do not feel it; it is intangible.
These three elude our inquiries, and hence merge into one.

Not by its rising, is it bright,
nor by its sinking, is it dark.
Infinite and eternal, it cannot be defined.
It returns to nothingness.
This is the form of the formless, being in non-being.
It is nebulous and elusive.

Meet it, and you do not see its beginning.
Follow it, and you do not see its end.
Stay with the ancient Way
in order to master what is present.
Knowing the primeval beginning is the essence of the Way.

Experience Unity

He who experiences the unity of life
sees his own Self in all beings,
and all beings in his own Self,
and looks on everything with an impartial eye.

Remember the Clear Light

Remember the clear light,
the pure clear white light
from which everything in the universe comes,
to which everything in the universe returns;
the original nature of your own mind.

The natural state of the universe unmanifest.

Let go into the clear light,
trust it, merge with it.

It is your own true nature,
it is home.

Be Grateful

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning is a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor…
Welcome and entertain them all.
Treat each guest honorably.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.

Countless words
count less
than the silent balance
between yin and yang.
