OM is not an immaterial abstraction

which transcends the world

of matter and earthly existence;

it is the world we live in

but do not see.

It is here- now,

I-Thou,

and “the reality that flows.”

The mountain is the mountain

And the Way is the same as of old.

Verily what is changed is my own heart.

Excellence is the result

of Caring more than others think is Wise,

Risking more than others think is Safe,

Dreaming more than others think is Practical,

and Expecting more than others think is Possible.

Life isn’t just about darkness or light, rather it’s about finding light within the darkness.

Landon Parham

As we work to create light for others, we naturally light our own way.

Lord, thou knowest better than myself

that I am growing older and will soon be old.

Keep me from becoming too talkative,

and especially from the unfortunate habit

of thinking that I must say something

on every subject and at every opportunity.

Release me from the idea

that I must straighten out other peoples’ affairs.

With my immense treasure of experience and wisdom,

it seems a pity not to let everybody partake of it.

But thou knowest, Lord,

that in the end I will need a few friends.

Keep me from the recital of endless details;

give me wings to get to the point.

Grant me the patience

to listen to the complaints of others;

help me to endure them with charity.

But seal my lips on my own aches and pains —

they increase with the increasing years

and my inclination to recount them is also increasing.

I will not ask thee for improved memory,

only for a little more humility

and less self-assurance

when my own memory doesn’t agree with that of others.

Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be wrong.

Keep me reasonably gentle.

I do not have the ambition to become a saint –

– it is so hard to live with some of them –

– but a harsh old person is one of the devil’s masterpieces.

Make me sympathetic without being sentimental,

helpful but not bossy.

Let me discover merits where I had not expected them,

and talents in people whom I had not thought to possess any.

And, Lord, give me the grace to tell them so.

Amen

Those who make compassion

an essential part of their lives

find the joy of life.

Kindness deepens the spirit

and produces rewards

that cannot be completely explained in words.

It is an experience more powerful than words.

To become acquainted with kindness

one must be prepared to learn new things

and feel new feelings.

Kindness is more

than a philosophy of the mind.

It is a philosophy of the spirit.

The lotus is the most beautiful flower,

whose petals open one by one.

But it will only grow in the mud.

In order to grow and gain wisdom,

first you must have the mud —

– the obstacles of life and its suffering. …

The mud speaks of the common ground

that humans share, no matter what

our stations in life. …

Whether we have it all

or we have nothing,

we are all faced with the same obstacles:

sadness, loss, illness, dying and death.

If we are to strive as human beings

to gain more wisdom,

more kindness and more compassion,

we must have the intention

to grow as a lotus

and open each petal one by one.

A man who is averse from harming even the wind

knows the sorrow of all things living. . . .

He who knows what is bad for himself

knows what is bad for others,

and he who knows what is bad for others

knows what is bad for himself.

This reciprocity should always be borne in mind.

Those whose minds are at peace

and who are free from passions

do not desire to live [at the expense of others]. . . .

He who understands

the nature of sin against wind

is called a true sage who understands karma.

When all our obstacles have been overcome,

and we find ourselves in a state of total presence,

the wisdom of enlightenment

manifests spontaneously

without limits,

just like the infinite rays of the sun.

The clouds have dissolved,

and the sun is finally free

to shine once again.
