Excellence is the result

of Caring more than others think is Wise,

Risking more than others think is Safe,

Dreaming more than others think is Practical,

and Expecting more than others think is Possible.

Do not spoil what you have

by desiring what you have not;

remember that what you now have

was once among the things

you only hoped for.

Few people believe their
Inherent mind is Buddha.
Most will not take this seriously,
And therefore are cramped.

They are wrapped up in illusions, cravings,
Resentments, and other afflictions,
All because they love the cave of ignorance.

A child’s world

is fresh and new and beautiful,

full of wonder and excitement.

It is our misfortune

that for most of us

that clear-eyed vision,

that true instinct for

what is beautiful and awe-inspiring,

is dimmed and even lost

before we reach adulthood.

We are what we think.
All that we are arises with our thoughts.
With our thoughts, we make the world.

Chasing after the world
Brings chaos.
Allowing it all to come to me
Brings peace.

Where beauty is, then there is ugliness;
where right is, also there is wrong.

Knowledge and ignorance are interdependent;
delusion and enlightenment condition each other.

Since olden times it has been so.
How could it be otherwise now?

Wanting to get rid of one and grab the other
is merely realizing a scene of stupidity.

Even if you speak of the wonder of it all,
how do you deal with each thing changing?

“Music does not depend

on being right,

on having good taste

and education and all that.”

“Indeed. Then what does it depend on?”

“On making music, Herr Haller,

on making music as well

and as much as possible

and with all the intensity

of which one is capable.”

Hermann Hesse

Joy, anger, sorrow, happiness,

find no place in that man’s breast;

for to him all creation is ONE.

And all things

being thus united in ONE,

his body and limbs

are but as dust of the earth,

and life and death,

beginning, and end,

are but as night and day,

and cannot destroy his peace.

How much less

such trifles as gain or loss,

misfortune or good fortune?

Chuang Tzu

The realms of good fortune and calamity

in human life are all made

of thoughts and imaginings.

Therefore Buddhists say

that the burning of desire for gain

is itself a pit of fire,

while drowning in greedy love

is itself a bitter sea.

The moment thoughts are pure,

fierce flames become a pond;

the moment you become aware,

the boat has arrived on the further shore.

If your thoughts vary at all,

your world will immediately differ,

so can we not be careful?
